The semantics of musical scores ‐ an approach to the mechanical composition of microtonal music
Stefan H. Szeider · Interface · 1990
Musical scores are symbolic items; their meanings develop through a process of adequate performance and psychophysical and cognitive perception. A formal scheme is presented modelling fundamental elements of this process. Scores and their cognitive interpretations are formalized by words of context‐free formal languages, the process is modelled by using the technique of attribute grammars. The scheme also applies to the composition with non‐standard tuning systems as criterion of perceptual validity.
