A major aspect of the proposed Fortran 8x is a flexible framework for providing and accommodating application-specific facilities for software development. One form of such facilities is application-specific languages, and one cost-effective way of implementing and maintaining certain language features is by use of syntax macros. For example, the complete CODASYL data base model can be implemented in Fortran with such macros.
