A relational approach to a nonprocedural language

Edward P. Katz, Edwin Towster · 1977

Nonprocedural languages offer the user an alternative to the explicit sequencing mode of current procedural languages. The alternative allows users to indicate what--instead of how--to perform a task. It also allows expression of the algorithm in a clear and convenient manner. Zara's relational model for operator semantics can be extended to user specified descriptions (definitions). Merging Zara's model with a nonprocedural language provides a system where the user can specify a set of relations between description components. The user would state each relation in a familiar form. The system itself would transform each relation (if necessary) to fit properly in the algorithm.
