What is a database? The information in a computerized system is often called a database although the term is used in many ways. For the purpose of this discussion, a database is a public or commercial collection of information such as Lexis—Nexis or Auerbach's IT Knowledge- base™. Many of these are fee-based services that include directories, compilations, searchable archives, and reference services.
