When dealing with the analysis of technical documents such m eengineenng drawings, diagrams or maps, it is quite natural for people with a background in patlem recognilion and computer vision to consider the problem as a special case of scene analysis. However, at closer Imk. draftsman-ship is also a language, and this linguistic pan must he taken into account in the interpretation process in order to achieve true understanding at n sernanlic level. This paper gives an overview oS the methods currenil y ured in technicat doc-ument analysis by variouq research teams to achieve such high-level interpreeltion, and tries ro show the newest trends and challenges in this field. We also propose some possible srcps towards a methodology for designing in an ordered anti efficient way specific interprctatlon systems for various applications.
