Trace forms, kronecker sums, and the shuffle matrix

David W. Lewis · Linear and Multilinear Algebra · 1996

The trace map on the ring of square matrices with entries in a field can be used to define various quadratic forms on this ring. This paper makes a study of some of these forms and in particular the "scaled trace forms" are shown to have a symmetric matrix representation involving both Kronecker sums and the shuffle matrix.
