Edge‐based image segmentation

Aly A. Farag · Remote Sensing Reviews · 1992

Image segmentation techniques can be classified into edge‐based and region‐based approaches. The edge‐based approach is critically examined in this paper. Contours are detected in two stages; edge enhancement followed by edge linking. A unified treatment for optimal edge enhancement filters is presented and a new path metric for sequential search based on the linear model is discussed. This metric forms the heart of an edge linking algorithm (LINK) that combines edge elements enhanced by an optimal filter. From a starting node, transitions are made to the goal nodes by a maximum likelihood metric. Experimental results on test as well as real world scenes are presented to show the effectiveness of the LINK algorithm.
