Design and Effectiveness of Intelligent Tutors for Operators of Complex Dynamic Systems: A Tutor Implementation for Satellite System Operators

CHRISTINE M. MITCHELL, T. Govindaraj · Interactive Learning Environments · 1990

Training operators of complex, predominantly automated dynamic systems is a challenging problem. Operators of such systems must cope with rare, potentially catastrophic events. The risks and complexity of such systems limit the effectiveness of on‐the‐job training (OJT); conventional classroom instruction with printed and audio‐visual media fails to capture the essential elements required to supervise a complex system in real time. There is a growing sense that computer‐based intelligent tutoring systems (ITS) offer a much needed alternative learning environment. Ideally, an ITS provides one‐on‐one instruction, apprenticeship‐style learning (without the risks of training on the actual system), and greater tolerance for error styles (see Collins, Browning & Newman, 1986).
