Bourses and brokers: stock exchanges as ICT junctions
Janneke Hermans, Onno de Wit · History and Technology · 2004
In the securities trade, communication was and is essential to acquire information on for instance, prices, and mediate contacts between many actors. This paper shows how ICT was used and deployed in the Dutch securities trade, especially in the period 1850–1970. After describing the organization and structure of the Dutch securities trade, the paper focuses on the Amsterdam Stock Exchange (ASE) as a junction from where communication lines ran to financial intermediaries and to subscribers of specialized financial news services. It is argued that ICT facilitated innovation of services and promoted changes in the organization of the Dutch securities trade.
