Influence of Pulsed Masking on Spondee Words
Donald D. Dirks, Deborah R. Bower · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1971
Two experiments were designed to observe the effects of selected pulsed maskers on the intelligibility of spondee words and bisyllabic items. The bisyllabic items had the same general physical and phonetic characteristics as the spondees, but the linguistic structure of the items was modified. The results of the first experiment demonstrated substantial release from masking for spondee words during the 10- and 1-interruptions/sec conditions and an increase in masking effectiveness at the very slow pulsing rate of 0.67 and 0.5 ips. In the second experiment, the effectiveness of the pulsed maskers and the intelligibility functions for the bisyllabic items were similar to results obtained earlier with monosyllables rather than spondees.
