The recovery of parsing configurations for LR(1) parsers

Kuo‐Chung Tai · 1977

For parsing context-free languages, a pushdown stack is needed to store information, the content of this stack called a parsing configuration. Some error correction techniques need a backward move (from right to left) to find a place to the left of the error detection point to start correcting input symbols. A problem associated with parser backup is that the compiler must keep and reprocess the parsed input in order to recover previous parsing configurations. In this paper the recovery of previous parsing configurations for LR(1) parsers without reprocessing the parsed input is discussed.
