Achievements and prospects for parallel computing

Geoffrey Fox · Concurrency Practice and Experience · 1991

Abstract Parallel computing works for the majority of large‐scale computations. The development of parallel hardware designs has been largely transferred to industry, while universities continue major research efforts Into better software environments. We describe a classification of problems and how different software models are needed for portable user‐friendly, high‐performance Implementations on parallel machines. The education of a new generation of computational scientists will be a major challenge to our universities.
