Security and confidentiality in a university computer network

Bruce Kerievsky · ACM SIGUCCS Newsletter · 1976

It is the intent of this paper to focus attention on the issue of security and confidentiality in a university computer network environment. By the term security, I mean protection for data from being written on by unauthorized network users. Correspondingly, confidentiality represents protection for data from being read by unauthorized computer users. The paper attempts to accomplish this objective in the following manner. First, I will discuss which segments of the computing population in university networks appear to require security and confidentiality for its programs and data. I will then discuss appropriate techniques by which such integrity and privacy can be attained and the problems that might occur in attempting to implement them. Finally, I will present what I have found to be several prevailing misunderstandings about computer network security.
