Chip thieves switch attacks to distributors

Roy Szweda · Computer Fraud & Security · 1997

Since we last reported on the “Chip Crime Plague”, ( Computer Fraud & Security , March 1997, p. 5), there have been some new developments and while it seems to be that ‘Chip Crime’ is still a big problem it is changing its targets for attack. These changes can be attributed to a variety of factors but mainly because the big chip suppliers have triggered security. There is also a matter of the media publicity which may have drawn in new players. In addition, the price of the favoured components, that is memory chips for DRAMS, has plummeted making them less attractive, but many other components are still at risk. There have been more police actions but only a few have led to convictions.
