FOCS: Feedback oriented channel selection scheme for Cognitive radios

This Cognitive radio network (CRN) is a key technology to solve the problems of spectrum scarcity and limited spectrum utilization. Furthermore, it can offer higher data rate by exploiting the best areas in the radio spectrum. However, the unpredictable nature of the primary users (PUs) seems to be a big challenge for the CRNs. It adversely affects the CR's quality of service (QoS) parameters. An efficient channel selection scheme can cater for the issue of the PU activity by choosing the low PU activity channels. In this paper, we propose an innovative feedback oriented channel selection scheme (FOCS) where the CR provides feedback to the CR base station (CRBS) about its collision experience with the PUs after completing its data transmission. The CRBS maintains the record about each channel and incorporates this information during the channel selection decision. Simulation results show that FOCS scheme significantly reduces the collisions with the PUs and provides better QoS to CRs.
