Hull's Concept of Inhibition: A Revision

Hull is often said to hold two-factor theory of inhibition, i.e., IH and SIX. However, as SIR is originally function of IR, his position is essentially based only on the factor of In. According to Hull, IR is a negative drive akin to tissue injury, fatigue, or 'pain' (2 , p. 7 3 ) , and SIR is 'habit' (2, p. 76) or conditioning of particular stimuli to the cessation of given activity in the presence of IR from that response. Then the following three basic formulas have been developed ( 1, 2 ) :
