This paper explains a scalable and adaptive multicast forwarding mechanism based on Explicit Multicast (Xcast). It optimizes the allocation of forwarding states in routers and used to improve the scalability of traditional IP multicast and Source-Specific Multicast. Comparing with previous work, this mechanism needs fewer routers in a multicast tree to store forwarding states so that forwarding states among routers are distributed in balanced. This paper discusses the MINSTATE algorithm which minimizes the total number of routers that store forwarding states in multicast tree. This mechanism/algorithm reduces the number of routers that store the forwarding states for a multicast tree.
