Disaggregated GIS architecture Lessons from recent developments in multi-site database management systems

Chris J. Webster · International Journal of Geographical Information Systems · 1988

An important dimension of the trend towards larger and more complex geographical information systems (GIS) is the need to develop multi-site systems in which a geographical database is disaggregated over a number of locations. Designers of such systems need to be cognizant of relevant developments in database theory. Some of these developments are examined, first by describing a number of architectures for disaggregated database systems and secondly, by commenting on the relative merits of those architectures. In the context of this discussion, attention is drawn to the absence of any true disaggregatve functionality in existing GIS products and several themes in current GIS research which are important to the design of a disaggregated GIS are identified
