Hill determinants and 1/N theory

A computationally efficient form of the Hill determinant method is devised, giving both E and (x 2 ) values, and is used to test the accuracy of that method in the light of recent criticisms. l -1 and N -1 asymptotic theories are used to check the numerical results.
