Asynchronous inputs in PLA-based synchronous state machines

Martin Bolton · International Journal of Electronics · 1990

The problems in handling asynchronous inputs in synchronous state machines based on PLAs and PALs are systematically studied. The types of state transition conditional on this type of input are described and rules for safe implementation developed. It is shown that the ‘textbook’ rules only apply to PAL implementations. Finally, the general case of several synchronous inputs is considered and a state assignment rule given.
