Understanding the Uses of the by Native Speakers and Korean Learners

This paper intends to investigate native English speakers’ agreement on choosing the in terms of its different uses and the factors which make the agreement rate low. It also attempts to see Korean learners’ performance in the choice of the in each use of the, and to examine the criteria Korean learners rely on in deciding definiteness. The analysis was based on the result of a fill-in-the-blank test conducted to native speakers and Korean learners and the result of descriptive test given to some Korean learners.
