Establishing Techonological Basis for Realizing the Next-GenerationRoad Services

Japan has been working to create the next-generation road system called SMARTWAY that will utilize advanced ITS technologies to provide diverse road transportation services. The National Institute for Land and Infrastructure Management of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has conducted a joint research with 23 private companies on the next-generation road service provision system based on advanced ITS technologies. The institute has then presented the achievements of the research to the public by carrying out an event “SMARTWAY Demo 2006” in February 2006. Furthermore, from the fall of 2007, the Next-generation road services will be launched and this report introduces the efforts towards ITS realization.
