Software engineering - what has it done for you?

David Griffiths · 2005

Software engineering and development is a young, relatively immature and fast growing industry that is an increasingly vital component of most business’s future success. More and more business’s operate in a real time environment where the response to changing markets may of necessity be measured in hours and days instead of months and years. In some instances such as in the financial markets, the response time maybe in seconds. Responsiveness and flexibility, are being the hallmarks of business success. However it can be argued that there is little evidence to show that we have gained ground in the world’s software engineering arena. So how are we going to satisfy the increasing demand for the software industry to be smarter in reducing time to deliver, high quality, mission critical software systems? This keynote speech will present the vision, the breadth and depth of software engineering activities that have got industry to where it is now and illustrate how we need to move forward in order for business’s to manage change in strategy, technology and organisation.
