Abstract — The purpose of this paper is to develop a comprehensive framework for modelling and performance analysis of TCP/IP transport protocol across WCDMA wireless interfaces of third and future generations. In this context, we provide a semi-analytical model that captures the behaviours of relevant components of the wireless architecture, such as power control and error recovery mechanisms at the data link layer. Moreover, we account for multi-user interference in the presence of heterogeneous traffic sources. The model is a suitable tool for analysis of the TCP/IP performance as a function of all relevant parameters. The fundamental motivation is to devise a consistent performance evaluation setup, by avoiding simplifications while trying to capture essential features and, more importantly, dynamics and interactions among various components. As a relevant application, a collection of numerical examples is reported, with particular emphasis on effects of the power control on the spurious fast retransmit and time out. The longer term perspective is to define an exhaustive control methodology for joint handling (optimization) of the various interactive components of current and future wireless interfaces and related services.
