Scilab is an interpreted high-performance language with control-flow statements. This, combined with functions, high-level data types, and object-oriented programming features, allows for the rapid creation of experimental programs as well as that of complete applications packages. Scilab interprets and evaluates statements typed in its main window. Simple statements are assignments such as variable=expression. Here the computed value of the expression is stored in the specified variable. Expression values are recursively computed from referred variables or constant values using operators and function calls. This chapter describes the basic elements of the Scilab language. The ensuing sections will describe Scilab constants, data types, and syntax. The chapter finishes with a description of some special data-type-related functions.
