The librarian's assistant: automatically organizing on-line books into dynamic bookshelves

Yoelle Maarek, Alan Jay Wecker · Multimedia Information Retrieval · 1994

Constructing bookshelves is usually done manually by the providers of online-book collections. This task requires human expertise and becomes tedious even for experts as soon as books become too numerous. This paper addresses the problem of automatically constructing bookshelves. It presents a tool, the Librarian's Assistant, which makes use of numerical as well as conceptual clustering techniques to generate a hierarchy of bookshelves from a set of unorganized books. The Librarian's Assistant can be used as a stand alone tool to assist documentation producers in the process of building manual bookshelves, in order to understand the underlying structure of a given library, as well as a facility integrated in an IR or hypertext system to expand the scope of searches.
