Constituents of Hybrid Reality: Cultural Anthropological Reflections and a Serious Game Design Experiment Merging Mobility, Media and Computing

Steffen P. Walz · Birkhäuser-Verlag eBooks · 2006

We are currently encountering a “hybrid reality” in which mobility, media and computing are merging. As a result, our socio-emotional interactions and ways of communicating are changing dramatically, along with ubiquitous technological devices and environments. This change can be reflected in and researched through experimental game design and cultural anthropological analysis. Part I of this paper gives a detailed theoretical outline, and part II introduces M.A.D. COUNTDOWN, a mobile multiplayer prototype game that investigates and facilitates proximate distance and distant proximity on the move into hybrid reality.
