Sound demonstration software for teaching DSP

Jianjun Zhu, W. W. Johnson · 2002

The purpose of the paper is to demonstrate how teaching a few key concepts in digital signal processing (DSP) can be made easier and more effective by exploiting the sound capabilities of today's multimedia computer systems, such as the PC. By using DSP concepts, the audible difference in sound quality of a music clip when downsampled with and without an anti aliasing filter can be explained to the students. By the same token, it is easy to explain the difference in quality of an upsampled sound signal when used with and without an interpolation filter. MATLAB (Version 4.2c) is used because of its ease of use, and cross platform portability. Sound data files are read in, processed, and then saved. It is then possible to hear the difference between signals either using MATLAB itself or using an appropriate sound tool.>
