Managing continuous range queries in mobile databases

Ying Cai, K.A. Hua · 2003

We previously presented a distributive processing model for real-time monitoring of mobile objects in user-defined spatial regions (see Ying Cai and Kien A. Hua, Proc. 21st IEEE Int. Performance, Computing and Commun. Conf. -IPCCC, p.259-66, 2002). Under this scheme, an object does not need to report its position to a server unless its movement affects any query results or it moves out of its resident domain. We extend this approach by maximizing an object's resident domain based on its own computing capability, i.e., allowing a more capable object to negotiate a larger resident domain. Our performance studies show that by accommodating and leveraging the heterogeneous mobile computing capability, both mobile communication overhead and server processing costs can be substantially reduced.
