Software Engineering Best Practices

This chapter gives a condensed version of what goes into production-level code and what life is like on a software engineering team. A central feature of writing production software is a good version control system. This is a software framework that tracks changes that programmers make to a codebase, syncing them with a master copy stored on a server somewhere. The chapter reviews some of the standard testing concepts that programmers would see in a hardcore software environment. It explains how they can use unit tests to make sure that they have fixed a glitch in their code without breaking something that was already working. “Test-driven development” (TDD) is an approach to software engineering that takes this idea to the extreme. Test-driven development is a way for individual programmers to go about getting their work done. Agile, on the other hand, is a way to organize teams of developers.
