Investigating linguistic behaviour in information dialogues with a computer

In developing natural-language computer interfaces it is necessary to explore the language behaviour of uninitiated subjects under various circumstances. An experiment was therefore set up to 1. collect data about the language use of subjects interacting with a simulated computer system using keyboard and screen and 2. to test the possibility of responding to the questions of the subject from a preprogrammed set of answers and/or dialogue control acts. In this paper both methodological aspects of the experiment and some results on the language use will be discussed. These results will be compared with telephone dialogues collected earlier.
