In the department of Fundamental Electricity and Instrumentation of the VUB (Vrije Universiteit Brussel, i.e. the Free University of Brussels), a new approach in measuring is proposed, which is called the IMMI-concept, and which has lead to extremely good results in several distinct application areas, such as the characterization of electrical, acoustical and mechanical systems. The paper describes the objectives of IMMI: Instrumentation based on the Interpretation by measuring, Modelling and Identification. Some relevant examples in the electrical field are given and the power of the IMMI-concept in the design of intelligent instrumentation is demonstrated.
