GIS WINS ACCEPTANCE IN REGIONAL ITS PROJECT
William Burke · 1995
This article describes how a geographic information system (GIS) will be used as a decision-support tool to speed and streamline the process of information distribution in the TRANSCOM program. TRANSCOM, a consortium of 14 transportation and public-safety agencies, serves a 50-mile radius around Manhattan and acts as a traffic-information clearinghouse for member agencies based in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. TRANSCOM plans to link real-time intelligent transportation systems (ITS) traffic elements used in regional ITS projects with a GIS-based incident management system.
