The assessment of fetal status in high-risk pregnancies requires the application of diflerent antenatal tests, being the non-stress test (NST) the most commonly performed. The NST is based on interpretation of the resting fetal heart rate IFHR) tracing, and attempts to relate the baseline FHR patterns to a prediction of fetal health. This paper describes the way knowledge is represented within NST-EXPERT, an expert system designed to interpret the NST, to suggest appropiate therapy and to predict fetal outcome.
