Minimum-distance classification is an important and useful technique in statistical pattern recognition and many other applications. It can be extended to the syntactic approach as well; the string case is considered. VLSI architectures using systolic arrays are presented to carry out these operations. It is shown that constant time complexity can be achieved regardless of the size of reference samples. 7 references.
