Speech and Audio Compression
P. Kroon · The Internet Encyclopedia · 2004
Abstract Many people enjoy Internet streaming of audio and video, or the ability to make free phone calls using a PC connected to the Internet. Audio compression is one of the fundamental technologies underlying these applications. This technology allows one to digitally represent speech and audio signals in an efficient manner. In this chapter we provide an overview of various speech and audio compression technologies, discuss the principles of their operation, and describe their attributes and limitations. We also explain the use of these technologies in several applications, such as Internet telephony and audio streaming.
