During the recent years, Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) has been a very active field of educational research and practice. Nevertheless, there are several problems yet to be solved that preclude the efficient use of emerging technologies and the establishment of fluent communication channels among the different actors involved in learning communities (technologists and educators). This paper describes the evolution of the interdisciplinary research group EMIC (Education, Media, Informatics, and Culture) of the University of Valladolid, in its effort aimed to solve some of those problems. In this context, the paper sketches the lessons learnt in the process of constructing a software components framework for CSCL as well as the efficient use of Grid technologies. This process is also analysed by means of the development and evaluation of several applications that were used to validate the proposals.
