Location update by binary cutting of ID

Y.B. Lee, Wing Shing Wong · 2002

Keeping track of mobiles location in a cellular system is an important issue for future personal communication systems. A new location registration scheme for cellular systems is proposed. It is based on a periodic question-and-answer cycles initiated by base stations. In every cycle, a set of systematic questions is sent by the base stations and the mobile units reply to their corresponding base stations with either '1' or '0'. From the answers received, one can construct estimates concerning which cells a mobile unit belongs to. An analysis of the performance of this registration scheme is provided when the questions are based on binary cutting of the ID's of the mobiles.
