Software for Modelling and Simulation - History, Developments Trends and Challenges.

Felix Breitenecker · 2006

This contribution presents development and trends of simulation software. The paper first follows the roots from analog computation to the introduction of the CSSL standard for simulation languages. The following chapter on numerical algorithms introduces the first extensions to CSSL by implicit model equations, and by discrete modelling. Then, time and state event structures are discussed in context with modelling and simulation of discrete and hybrid systems. As recent developments, in the following VHDL-AMS and the Modelica standard for continuous and hybrid modelling, and UML-RT and DEVS for discrete modelling and simulation are discussed. Of importance are comparisons and benchmarks for simulators, sometimes with annoying results: speed is reciprocal to comfort. The contribution closes with a view on common structures in continuous and discrete simulation and with a preview of recent developments. 1.
