Configuring an FTP Server

Christopher Negus · 2015

The File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is one of the oldest protocols in existence for sharing files over networks. What makes FTP insecure is that everything sent between the FTP client and server is done in clear text. This chapter describes how to install, configure, use, and secure a file transfer protocol (FTP) server using the vsftpd package. Setting up an FTP server is an easy way to share files over a TCP network. The Very Secure FTP Daemon (vsftpd package) is available for Fedora, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Ubuntu, and other Linux systems. The chapter describes what you need to do to your Linux firewall to make both passive and active FTP connections work. It also describes how you can configure your firewall (iptables), TCP wrappers (hosts.allow and hosts.deny), and SELinux (Booleans and file contexts).
