Supporting Collaboration With Advanced Multimedia Electronic Mail: The NSF EXPRES Project

Gary M. Olson, Daniel E. Atkins · Psychology Press eBooks · 2014

Collaborative work is central to modern science and engineering. In most empirical sciences, research is conducted by teams of investigators rather than by solitary individuals. The frontiers of science and technology usually consist of problems that are best attacked by interdisciplinary teams. Inter national competition for ideas and technology favor collaborative efforts. The expense of specialized equipment such as space telescopes, super computers, and particle accelerators necessitates the sharing of facilities and their supporting resources, requiring coordination and cooperation. Large interdisciplinary research centers are now common in many fields. Indeed, our entire system of federal support for science and engineering is based on community evaluation of the content of science and collaborative decision making about what kinds of science to support. Thus, at all levels, from the conduct of science to its administration and funding, groups of individuals participate in the process, aided where possible by modern communication technologies.
