A preliminary model of subjective voice quality

Psychophysical scaling is a popular methodology for subjective speech quality assessment. Unfortunately, scaling techniques are not bias-free measurements. A conceptual model is developed, based on the theory of signal detectability and the internal-noise model. The implications of the conceptual model for speech quality assessment are discussed.
