Clozing the Reading Gap.

Cloze procedure was developed more than twenty-five years ago, and since then hundreds of examples of its use have been reported. Many teachers have found cloze useful in gauging the readability of text. Typically cloze involves the deletion of a portion of the words in a passage and readers are asked to insert a sensible word in each blank space.
