TCP performance enhancements in ATM networks with large buffers and priority mechanisms

M. Perloff, Kurt Reiss · 2002

Poor performance of the standard TCP/IP protocol over high-speed ATM networks has been observed in previous studies. The present paper reports on improvements of TCP/IP performance in an ATM wide area network achieved by implementation of simple congestion control mechanisms based on utilization of large buffers and cell discard priority mechanisms. An output-buffered ATM switch architecture with adjustable buffers is considered in a coast-to-coast OC3 network. Improvements in both throughput and fairness observed in simulations are discussed.
