Mobile computing brings the versatility, computing power and communications capabilities of desktop PCs to utility applications ranging from field crew timekeeping and job tracking to transmission structure inspections and inventory management. A successful mobile computing rollout requires that several hardware, software, peripheral and wireless communications systems work together. At the same time, each customer need is separate and the utility industry has its own set of unique hardware and software requirements. The technologies needed to fulfill those requirements are quite dispersed, so the vendors must be motivated to work together as partners to accomplish goals. To achieve this partnership environment, it often helps to select a key partner or systems integrator with verifiable experience in mobile computing rollouts.
