A spread-spectrum split-signal technique for flexible use of frequency bands

E.S. Warner, David Everett · 1992

The paper describes a novel technique for use with direct-sequence spread-spectrum (DS-SS) radio-positioning systems. A high-rate pseudorandom (PN) sequence is sampled to provide a number of lower-rate sequences which are then used to modulate different carriers. These low-rate signals are transmitted to a receiver where they are recombined to recover the original high-rate PN sequence on which conventional range measurements are made. It is shown that the range resolution which can be achieved at a receiver by use of the split-signal format is comparable with what can be achieved by use of a conventional wideband SS signal.
