Real-Time Algorithm for Image Segmentation Based on the Morphological Reconstruction

J.P. Morgenstern · 2005

The segmentation algorithm described here, has the facility of locating contiguous bodies which are brighter (alternatively darker) than the immediate surrounding areas. The algorithm is based on the reconstruction algorithm from morphological mathematics; this algorithm seeks to delineate areas in the image which, in morphological or topological terms (in three dimensional space), represent hills or plateaus. As such, the algorithm uses information about the the relationship of a pixel to its neighboring pixels rather than just using the aggregate gray level statistics as do other algorithms. A usual, pipeline implementation based on cellular automata results in art iterative process. Instead, the real-time implementation presented here is a serial algorithm.
