Channel assignment strategies in a hot-spot cell

Francis C. M. Lau, Shek F. Yau · 2002

In this paper, two system models have been investigated to combat the traffic in a hot-spot cell. The first one introduces pico-cells into the original system and makes use of umbrella handoff between the micro- and pico-cells. In the second system, the hot-spot cell will hyper-reuse the frequencies of the adjacent cells. This is possible by introducing three advanced handoff algorithms: intelligent directed retry, interference rejection handover and interference protection handover. They are used to ensure channels with sufficient quality are assigned to users. Moreover, when the quality of the channels is deteriorating, handoffs would be requested before the call is dropped. The grade-of-service, handoff activity and call drop rates of the systems are simulated and compared.
