Unifying Medical Information Using an Architecture Based on Descriptions.

A. L. Rector, W. Anthony Nowlan, Stephen Kay · PubMed Central · 1990

An architecture for representing medical information is presented. It is based on descriptions using a semantic network formalism, and unifies the representation of the medical domain with the model of the medical record. The representation of the medical domain is considered in relation to traditional classifications and an emphasis placed on its generative properties and the requirement to represent what it is possible to say during data entry. The medical record aims to be faithful to the process of clinical care including both the description of the patient and the decision making process. This architecture forms the basis of the PEN&PAD prototype doctor's workstation
