Mad-postman : A Look-ahead Message Propagation Method For Static Bidimensional Meshes

A message-passing network needs some kind of flow control which regulates the allocation of buflers to messages upon its reception and it also blocks any transmission that may cause an overflow. The pow-control technique, implemented in a distributed manner, is fundamental in determining the router internal structure and also the minimum and average latency. Three switching mechanisnis were taking into account in this work, namely: wormhole, cut-through and mad-postman. This paper analyzed and compared by means of a high-level simulation these three mechanisms when applied to 2-0 mesh networks with dimensional order routing. Networks with both bit-serial and parallel links have been considered. Network performance has been measured in terms of the average message latency and the maximum sustained throughput under a random pattern of traffic.
